About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today we have Dr. Jane Smith, a public health expert and the lead instructor for the Postgraduate Certificate in Social Justice in Public Health. Dr. Smith, thank you for joining us. GUEST: Thank you for having me. I'm excited to be here. HOST: To start, could you share a bit about your personal experiences that led you to focus on social justice in public health? GUEST: Absolutely. I've always been passionate about healthcare accessibility and quality. Working in various communities, I've seen firsthand how social determinants impact health outcomes. This inspired me to advocate for social justice in public health. HOST: Fascinating. Now, what current industry trends do you think learners should be aware of when it comes to social justice and public health? GUEST: There's growing recognition of the importance of addressing health disparities and promoting equity. Telehealth and digital health are also becoming more prevalent, providing opportunities to reach underserved populations. HOST: That's true. Now, what challenges have you faced in teaching or learning this subject, and how do you address them? GUEST: One challenge is the emotional toll of discussing health disparities. We create a safe space for students to share experiences and encourage self-care. Another challenge is the ever-evolving nature of public health issues, so we stay current by incorporating real-world examples and case studies. HOST: Excellent, that's a thoughtful approach. Lastly, where do you see the future of social justice in public health, and how does this course prepare learners for it? GUEST: I believe social justice will become increasingly integral to public health practice. Our course equips learners with critical skills to address health disparities, fostering community empowerment and promoting health equity. HOST: Dr. Smith, thank you so much for your insights. It's clear that the Postgraduate Certificate in Social Justice in Public Health is a timely and essential program for professionals committed to advocating for equitable health outcomes.
